If you like Jimmy Hendrix, vintage cars, wine and beautiful scenery, this quirky trip is perfect for you!
Forget about hiking through vineyards! On the Domaine de la Tourade estate, in Gigondas, Frédéric Haut has devised a charming, retro-style way of visiting the vineyards and tasting the estate wines. A year ago, this wine-producer, who is a wine enthusiast (of course!) and also a 70s fan, started organizing trips in his VW campervan.
This 6-seater, vintage « minibus » with its comfortable, colourful hippy decor and music is a great place to enjoy a gourmet tasting session. You can book a romantic trip or a tour with family or friends, through the vineyards, accompanied by the wine-grower. The trip lasts nearly one and a half hours, during which time you’ll have a chance to explore some Gigondas vineyard plots, admire the Dentelles de Montmirail, learn about the history of the estate, and most importantly, taste some of the wines, in the middle of the vineyards. It is one of the few estates in France where you can do this.
Frédéric talks passionately and enthusiastically about his work. He was born in Gigondas and joined his father-in-law, André Richard’s estate, in 1998. He is a self-taught wine-grower, who moved from desk work to vineyards. He has been the happy owner of the estate, together with his wife, for one year now.
So, let’s head off for a ride through the vineyards. We stop first to taste some of the Domaine de Tourade estate wines: a white, a rosé and two reds. This is a great opportunity for connoisseurs and novices alike to sample AOC wines, in the presence of a wine-grower, and discover the complexity and richness of Gigondas and Vacqueyras wines.
A few kilometres further on, it’s time for a second stop and a chance to taste the final two wines produced on the estate. Frédéric and his family produce eight different wines on their 16 hectares of land: a white wine, a rosé, five red wines and a Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise. You can enjoy the wines, served with biscuit nibbles and tapenade, as well as the view. The wines are generous and supple with silky mature tannins and hints of liquorice, cocoa and cherry. The muscat is fresh and full-bodied with aromas of apricot and honey. A real treat to round off your visit!
Don’t forget to make a telephone reservation before dropping by.
Visits are available from April to October, except at harvest time. Visits also available out-of-season, during fine weather, on request.
